JEWELLERY CARE
onomatopée jewellery is made from either solid sterling silver or 18ct gold vermeil plated sterling silver. Like all jewellery, our pieces are subject to normal conditions of ‘wear and tear’. It is important to note that sterling silver naturally tarnishes. Gold vermeil plating is not a permanent process and will fade with time. Everyday wear may speed up this process, especially on rings and bracelets as these have frequent contact with surfaces. Vermeil re-plating falls under normal ‘wear and tear’, however, we do offer a chargeable re-plating service on some of our collections. Please note that due to the delicate nature of pearls and certain gemstones, not all items are available for re-plating.
There are certain things that can be damaging to your jewellery. We advise to always remove your jewellery before showering, swimming, exercising or sleeping. Please note that chlorine is especially damaging to jewellery. Make sure to remove your jewellery when applying perfumes and lotions as these can tarnish sterling silver and speed up fading on gold plating.
STORING & CLEANING YOUR JEWELLERY
Everyday wear, dust and chemicals all have an effect on the surface of precious metals. Protect your jewellery pieces by storing them in separate fabric lined boxes or grip sealed bags so they do not get tarnished and tangle or scratch against each other. Please ensure that you rinse off any chemicals that come into contact with your jewellery straight away. You can clean your jewellery with a soft polishing cloth that can be used for sterling silver and plated items.
FRESHWATER PEARLS
Wipe your pearls with soft cloth. This will help prevent any buildup of oils or other substances that may have come in contact with your jewellery. If your pearls are visibly stained, you can mix a solution of lukewarm water and mild dish soap, dip a soft cleaning cloth in it and wipe the pearls. Do NOT submerge a pearl necklace in water.
WHAT IS GOLD VERMEIL?
Gold vermeil has some key elements that make it distinctive and superior to gold plating. Vermeil is a technique originating in the 19th century, where gold is applied to sterling silver. Gold vermeil is made in a similar style to gold plating but requires a thicker layer of gold. The gold layer must be above 2.5 microns, creating a finish that is five times thicker than average gold plating, and far more durable.
HOW LONG DOES GOLD VERMEIL LAST?
Due to its thicker gold layer, gold vermeil is a durable option for jewellery pieces. Taking proper care of your favourite pieces, like necklaces and bracelets, will ensure your pieces stand the test of time. There are numerous ways to care for your jewellery, from keeping it clean, to keeping it away from liquids, and even storing it in its own pouch rather than thrown in with other pieces.
